Celebrating Our Superstar Teachers
In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week 2017 this Monday 5/8 through Friday 5/12, members of our community nominated superstar teachers making an impact for kids and families in West Contra Costa!
We reached out to all nominated teachers asking for their perspectives and reflections as educators in our community. Some teachers shared a message with peers, some a message with West Contra Costa students, and others about their favorite part of working in schools.

What do you want to tell West Contra Costa students? You are more than capable of accomplishing all your heart’s desires. It takes perseverance and effective effort to reach your goals. There are many people in the WCCUSD community that want to see you succeed! Be kind to others, stand up for what you believe in, be humble and know that YOUR life matters. You are loved and respected agents of change and YOU are going to make this world a better place!
¿Qué te gustaría decirles a los estudiantes de WCC? Eres capaz de cumplir todos los deseos de tu corazón. Se necesita perseverancia y esfuerzo efectivo para alcanzar sus metas. ¡Hay muchas personas en la comunidad de WCCUSD que te quieren ver triunfar! Sé amable con los demás, defiende lo que crees, sé humilde y reconoce que tu vida importa. ¡Son amados y respetados agentes del cambio y USTEDES van a hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor!
Ariadna Diaz, Dover Elementary
What do you want to tell West Contra Costa students? I grew up in Richmond, California, a city that in 2004, was ranked the 12th most dangerous city in America. Although notorious for its crime, low-income neighborhoods and inner-city public school system, the city of Richmond shaped who I am today. The education system which I was first able to partake in over 20 years ago, is the one I am teaching in today. Upon joining Teach for America, I have been granted the opportunity to teach bilingual 1st grade at Dover Elementary. I have made a difference in the lives of students who just like myself, must overcome the opportunity gap. Like myself, I know you are capable of achieving great heights. I know there are many systems trying to bring you down but you must persevere. Try your hardest in school. Work hard but also be involved in order to be a leader at your school. Take the position as class president or become the soccer captain. With perseverance you too can overcome adversity and graduate from a world-renowned university. You have a story to tell and knowledge to gain. You are powerful.
¿Qué te gustaría decirles a los estudiantes de WCC? Crecí en Richmond, California, una ciudad que en el 2004, fue clasificada como la 12° ciudad más peligrosa de América. A pesar de ser notoria por el crimen, los vecindarios de bajos ingresos y el sistema de escuelas públicas, la ciudad de Richmond formó quién soy hoy. El sistema educativo en el que tuve la primera oportunidad de participar hace más de 20 años, es en el que estoy enseñando en la actualidad. Al unirme a Teach for America, se me concedido la oportunidad de enseñar 1er grado bilingüe en Dover Elementary. He hecho una diferencia en las vidas de los estudiantes que como yo, debe superar la brecha de oportunidad. Como yo, sé que eres capaz de alcanzar grandes alturas. Sé que hay muchos sistemas tratando de bajarte, pero debes perseverar. Intenta con toda tus fuerzas en la escuela. Trabajar arduo, pero también involucrate con el fin de ser un líder en tu escuela. Toma la posición como presidente de la clase o conviértete en el capitán del equipo de fútbol. Con perseverancia tú también puede superar la adversidad y graduarte de una universidad de renombre mundial. Tú tienes una historia que contar y un conocimiento que ganar. Eres poderoso.

What would you say to a teacher considering joining the West Contra Costa community? Teaching is one of the most challenging and rewarding professions out there. Teaching is not for people who want to sit at a desk all day or who like to take leisurely lunch breaks. Teaching is for individuals who deeply believe in the potential of all young people, and have the passion and commitment to help them reach that potential. Every day you will face a new challenge that will require patience, persistence, and creativity. Every day you might feel frustrated and overwhelmed by the variety of challenges you and your students face. With clear goals, hard work, dedication, love, and a growth-mindset, you can make an incredible impact on the lives of young people. Your students and their families have countless lessons to teach you, and will undoubtedly help you become a better person and educator.
¿Qué le dirías a un maestro(a) que está considerando ser parte de la comunidad de WCC? Enseñar es una de las profesiones más desafiantes y gratificantes que hay. Dar clases no es para alguien que quiera sentarse en un escritorio todo el dia o para quienes desean tomar relajados descansos. Enseñar es para los individuos que creen profundamente en el potencial de la juventud y tienen la pasión y el compromiso de ayudarlos a alcanzar ese potencial. Cada día enfrentarás un nuevo desafío que requerirá paciencia, persistencia y creatividad. Cada día te puedes sentir frustrado y abrumado por la variedad de desafíos que tu y tus estudiantes enfrentan. Con metas claras, trabajo duro, dedicación, amor, y una mentalidad de crecimiento, puedes hacer un impacto increíble en la juventud. Tus estudiantes y sus familias tienen innumerables lecciones para enseñarte, y sin duda te ayudarán a convertirte en una mejor persona y educador.

How can we improve teacher retention in West Contra Costa? Teacher retention in WCC can be improved by a significant salary increase. If it wasn’t for my awesome students, I would be looking elsewhere just to afford living in the bay area. Since WCC teachers are paid the least in the bay area, other districts have more competition for high quality teachers.
¿Cómo podemos mejorar la retención de maestros en WCC? La retención de maestros en WCC puede mejorarse mediante un aumento salarial significativo. Si no fuera por mis estupendos estudiantes, estaría buscando en otra parte sólo para poder vivir en el área de la bahía. Dado que los maestros de WCC son los que menos ganan en el área de la bahía, otros distritos tienen más competencia por maestros de alta calidad.

What’s your favorite part of working in a school? One of my favorite parts of working in a school is to see my students socialize with each other in the mornings. This setting helps me imagine these little curious minds as young adults. This imagination reminds me that the future is in my students’ hands. They are here, at school, with me, to get all necessary tools to be successful. They rely on my input and leadership. Because of my students, I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to be an influential part of the natural process called “shaping the future.” With this thought, energized and full of optimism, I start my mornings. Often, when my former students visit me, their growth in character and body helps me strengthen my beliefs.
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de trabajar en una escuela? Una de mis partes favoritas de trabajar en una escuela es ver a mis estudiantes socializar entre ellos en las mañanas. Este escenario me ayuda a imaginar a estas pequeñas mentes curiosas como adultos jóvenes. Esta imaginación me recuerda que el futuro está en manos de mis estudiantes. Están aquí, en la escuela, conmigo, para conseguir todas las herramientas necesarias para obtener el éxito. Confían en mi aportación y liderazgo. Debido a mis estudiantes, soy muy afortunada de tener la oportunidad de ser una parte influyente del proceso natural llamado “moldear el futuro.” Con este pensamiento, energizado y lleno de optimismo, comienzo mis mañanas. What’s your favorite part of working in a school? My favorite part of working in a school is building our classroom community. Most of our students start their education in Kindergarten where they will make their first friends and learn to relate to others. I think it is imperative make our students realize that everyone wants to be respected,appreciated, and loved, and that those are feelings that have to be built daily through relationships.
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de trabajar en una escuela? Mi parte favorita de trabajar en una escuela es la creación de nuestra comunidad en el aula. La mayoría de nuestros estudiantes comienzan su educación en el Kinder donde harán sus primeros amigos y aprenderán a relacionarse con otros. Creo que es imperativo que nuestros estudiantes se den cuenta de que todos quieren ser respetados, apreciados y amados, y que esos son sentimientos que deben ser construidos diariamente a través de las relaciones.
Kristin Thurmond, Valley View Elementary
What or who inspired you to become a teacher? I became a teacher because of a woman I worked with in North Philadelphia, Marge McLaughlin. She was an assistant principal at a middle school for over 20 years and invited me to shadow her. I immediately knew that education and working with children was where I needed to be. I then entered a two year AmeriCorps program that focused on urban schools. It was life changing and finalized my decision to return to school to get my credential. I am eternally grateful to Mrs. McLaughlin for her guidance and the opportunities she provided me with.
¿Qué o quién te inspiró a convertirte en maestra? Me convertí en maestra debido a una mujer con la que trabajé en North Philadelphia, Marge McLaughlin. Ella fue asistente de directora en una escuela secundaria por más de 20 años y me invitó a seguirla. Inmediatamente supe que la educación y el trabajo con niños era donde yo necesitaba estar. Entonces entré en un programa de dos años de AmeriCorps que se centró en escuelas urbanas. Fue un cambio de vida y finalizo mi decisión de regresar a la escuela para obtener mi credencial. Estoy eternamente agradecida a la Sra. McLaughlin por su orientación y las oportunidades que me brindó.
Kristina Beltz, Downer Elementary
What do you hope your students remember most about you as a teacher? I hope my students remember that I care about them and I think they can do anything. I really try to build relationships with each student to see where they’re at and what they need to succeed. My curriculum changes a lot from year to year based on what students need emotionally and academically. As a teacher it’s really important to me that students learn about the world beyond the basic subjects. I believe that life experiences can leave more of an impact on peoples’ lives than only books. This year I have a fantastic group of sweet smart students. Because they needed an extra something to make learning more meaningful, I applied for grants to get engineering kits, more art supplies, and awesome field trip experiences like an overnight at the Oakland Zoo. They have had a lot of fun learning about themselves and each other as they work together.
¿Qué espera que sus estudiantes recuerden más de usted como maestra? Espero que mis estudiantes recuerden que me preocupo por ellos y creo que pueden hacer cualquier cosa. Realmente intentó construir relaciones con cada estudiante para ver dónde están y lo que necesitan para tener éxito. Mi currículo cambia mucho de un año a otro basado en lo que los estudiantes necesitan emocional y académicamente. Como maestra, es muy importante para mí que los estudiantes aprendan sobre el mundo más allá de temas básicos. Creo que las experiencias de vida pueden crear un mayor impacto en las vidas de las personas que sólo los libros. Este año tengo un grupo fantástico de estudiantes inteligentes. Debido a que necesitaban algo adicional para que el aprendizaje fuera más significativo, aplique a becas para obtener paquetes de ingeniería, más suministros de arte e increíbles paseos como una noche en el Zoológico de Oakland. Se han divertido mucho aprendiendo de ellos mismos y entre sí, trabajan juntos.

What do you hope your students remember most about you as a teacher? As summer sneaks up and another school year comes to an end, I hope my students remember that I cared, not just for their learning, but for them and their families. I hope they remember the laughs and safe learning environment that we created in our classroom for all to enjoy. The respect that was modeled, not just for learning, but for each other. I hope they remember that I believe in them; in their hopes and dreams. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to influence their lives, impart values, stimulate creativity, and develop compassion.
¿Qué espera que sus estudiantes recuerden más de usted como maestra? Como el verano se acerca y otro año escolar llega a su fin, espero que mis estudiantes recuerden que me importan, no sólo por su aprendizaje, sino por ellos y sus familias. Espero que recuerden las risas y el ambiente de aprendizaje seguro que creamos en nuestra aula para que todos disfrutarán. El respeto que fue modelado, no sólo para aprender, sino entre todos. Espero que recuerden que yo creo en ellos; en sus esperanzas y sueños. Siempre estaré agradecida por la oportunidad de influenciar sus vidas, impartir valores, estimular su creatividad y desarrollar la compasión.

What do you want to tell West Contra Costa students?
I would like to speak directly to my own students, the 2016/17 Dover TK class:
Hello TK kids, it’s me, Ms. Wheeler. 🙂
I love you! You have all grown as thinkers this year and I am very proud of you. You learned how to write your name, how to create and perform your own opera, and how to solve a problem with your friends. Congratulations; you are SO ready for kindergarten.
Thank you for a beautiful, peaceful year: you made me smile every single day, you were enthusiastic about learning, and you took good care of each other. I will miss you like crazy. Please visit, write, and call me; I love hearing about your lives.
I know it is sad and hard to say goodbye, but we will always have the TK memories in our hearts, like the time when the spider we were observing jumped onto Hector! That was really funny. Plus, you have many adventures ahead of you in your next class.
Thank you for being my friends this year and for working so hard. Always remember to believe in yourself – I know that you can do anything you put your mind to. You are my heroes!

¡Los amo! Todos ustedes han crecido como pensadores este año y estoy muy orgullosa de ustedes. Aprendieron cómo escribir su nombre, cómo crear y realizar su propia ópera, y cómo resolver un problema con sus amigos. Felicitaciones; estan muy listos para el kinder.
Gracias por un año hermoso y pacífico: me hicieron sonreír todos los días, estuvieron entusiasmados por aprender y se cuidaron bien. Los echaré de menos. Por favor, visiten, escriban y llámenme; me encanta escuchar sobre sus vidas.
Sé que es triste y difícil decir adiós, pero siempre tendremos los recuerdos de TK en nuestros corazones, ¡como la vez que la araña que estábamos observando saltó sobre Héctor! Eso fue muy divertido. Además, tienen muchas aventuras por delante en su próxima clase.
Gracias por ser mis amigos este año y por trabajar tan duro. Recuerden siempre creer en sí mismos – sé que pueden hacer cualquier cosa que se propongan. Ustedes son mis héroes!

What’s your favorite part of working in a school? What I love about working in a school is the unique relationships you make with not only the students but the entire family. We teachers become very invested in the child, not just in their academic life but the whole child. I really enjoy watching and seeing each child grow as a person, I love when old students want to come back and visit me to tell me about what is going on in their life. Till this day I keep in touch with ex-students who I had when they were 7-9 years old and are now in their twenties, some of them have become my own children’s babysitters.
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de trabajar en una escuela? Lo que más me gusta de trabajar en una escuela son las relaciones únicas que creas no sólo con los estudiantes, sino toda la familia. Los maestros invertimos mucho en el niño, no sólo en su vida académica sino en el niño entero. Realmente disfruto ver a cada niño crecer como una persona, me encanta cuando los estudiantes viejos quieren regresar y visitarme para contarme sobre lo que está pasando en su vida. Hasta este día me mantengo en contacto con ex-estudiantes que tenía cuando tenían 7-9 años de edad y ahora están en sus veinte, algunos de ellos se han convertido en las niñeras de mis propios niños.

What part of the school day is your favorite? Why? My favorite part of the school day is late afternoon when I read aloud to my students. The words on the page come to life and my students are engaged and excited to hear what’s coming next. Emotions are heightened and they delve into the storylines and characters prompting interesting conversations and a love for reading.
¿Qué parte del día escolar es su favorito? ¿Por qué? Mi parte favorita del día escolar es en la tarde cuando leo en voz alta a mis estudiantes. Las palabras en la página cobran vida y mis estudiantes interactúan y están emocionados por escuchar lo que sigue. Las emociones aumentan y se profundizan en las historias y personajes que provocan conversaciones interesantes y un amor por la lectura.
