During my time as a principal, I realized the first day of school was very special. It was much more than an early wake-up, teary-eyed goodbyes, and long drop-off lines. The first day of school was a fresh beginning. My teachers and I had 180 days to maximize learning for every child in our classrooms– to engage, to assess, to intervene, to inspire, to encourage, and to offer the supports needed to prepare our students for the best possible future.
As a parent of three children, I feel very much the same way. My children have a new chance to figure out how to become organized, to make new friends, to develop a new interest, and to blossom into the next phase of themselves. The gradebooks are reset– they each have a clean slate.
As all those who are part of a student’s life look forward to the first day of school, we are reminded that the partnership between families and school staff is essential for children to reach their fullest potential each and every day. The ultimate support system for students is not an expert teacher, but an informed and supportive family. While families play a key role in this work, too often, information and resources are not shared in a timely, accurate, or accessible manner.
In an effort to help parents access critical tools and potentially find a key that may unlock a new path on their child’s academic journey, we are excited to introduce our Maximize 180 campaign. Over the course of the school year, we will provide parents and community members with resources on how to make the most of a range of opportunities — from back-to-school night to college applications. We will also share regular reminders to help families keep track of important dates and key deadlines.

Como madre de tres hijos, siento lo mismo. Mis hijos tienen una nueva oportunidad de descubrir cómo organizarse, hacer nuevos amigos, desarrollar un nuevo interés y florecer en la siguiente fase de ellos mismos. Los libros de calificaciones se reinician; cada uno tiene un nuevo comienzo.
Como todos los que forman parte de la vida de un estudiante esperan el primer día de clases, recordemos que el trabajo entre las familias y el personal de la escuela es esencial para que los niños alcancen su máximo potencial todos los días. El sistema más fundamental de apoyo para los estudiantes no es un maestro experto, sino una familia informada y solidaria. Si bien las familias juegan un papel clave en este trabajo, con demasiada frecuencia, la información y recursos no se comparten de manera oportuna, precisa o accesible.
