On November 19th, 2024 we launched our new CE&O theme, Exploration of Arts and Communications Careers, welcoming 19 K-3 families from WCC schools. Families explored various arts-related careers, reflecting on what resonated with them the most.

Guest speaker Julia Liepman, a WCCUSD art teacher, shared insights on Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) programs covering Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual, and Media Arts. The evening ended with a hands-on screen-printing activity led by the Richmond Art Center’s Elaine Moreno-Jolly and Julia LaChica.

Families took home one of three books to continue their learning and exploration at home: I Like the Performing Arts … What Jobs Are There?, I Like Art … What Jobs Are There?, and How to Write a Story.

Families shared with staff how much they enjoyed the event. One parent, Jessica, expressed that it was “a great opportunity to expose your kids to different career paths. Today’s session focused on careers in the arts. It was great to watch my children explore the arts and which art they like to do/perform.”

But the fun didn’t stop there! On January 14, we hosted 4th-6th grade families for another session exploring this theme. Students rated arts and communication careers by interest while parents guessed their children’s preferences. There were definitely a few surprises along the way!

Chris Read, WCCUSD VAPA Coordinator, shared district opportunities, and band teacher Eric Lim and his students performed and answered questions about the band program. A 6th-grader shared, “If you want to learn more about arts and music this is really awesome!” And Eric, a first-time parent participant there with his 4th grader, shared that it was a “helpful workshop that helps determine what your child’s interests are so they can focus on a specific area of interest.”

Our final session for the Exploration of Arts and Communications Careers will be for 7th through 12th grade students and their families. We will be joined by several fabulous guest panelists for that session on Tuesday, February 11th, 5pm-7pm, including:

And don’t miss out on our next career theme: Exploration of Health and Medical Science Careers!
